What Should You Put Your Mattress On? Adjustable Bases, Box Springs, Foundations, Frames

What Is a Mattress Base?

A mattress base is the supportive structure—whether it’s an adjustable frame, a traditional box spring/foundation, or a solid platform—that your mattress sits on. Beyond holding the weight of your mattress, the right base can:

  • Boost comfort by providing consistent support
  • Extend mattress life by reducing wear
  • Improve airflow to prevent moisture build-up
  • Elevate style and bed height in your room

Types of Mattress Bases

There are many different mattress bases available, and some can offer different benefits depending on your sleep style, mattress, or preferences. Below we explain the differences and benefits of each mattress base option.

Adjustable Base (Power Base)

Adjustable Base

An Adjustable Base—also known as a Power Base—allows you to raise your head and/or legs to find the perfect position for comfort, entertainment, and pain relief.

  • Performs best with flexible memory foam or hybrid mattresses for a more ergonomic shape
  • Qualifies for most manufacturers recommended support for mattress warranties
  • Often features a telescoping leg; allowing the base to be different heights to fit your furniture and space

Box Spring

Box Spring

A traditional Box Spring is a coil base designed to support innerspring mattresses and add height. Not ideal for most modern mattresses but were traditionally for airflow and added bounce.

  • As a caution— most traditional Box Springs do not work with modern mattresses and can cause damage if used

Foundation

Foundation

A Foundation is solid or slatted wooden base — without springs — encased in fabric. Ideal for foam, coil, latex, or hybrid mattresses that need sturdy support without motion transfer.

  • These bases allow height and airflow to reduce moisture build-up in the mattress and provide support
  • Foundations often come in different heights — 2″, 5″, or 9″ — making it easy to fit it in with your decor and height needs

Platform Bed

Platform Bed

A Platform Bed is a bed frame designed to hold your mattress, but not all platform beds are the same:

  • Some have slats or a solid surface with a center support foot — which supports the mattress directly. No foundation or box spring needed. The slats are usually 3” or less apart to meet your mattress warranty requirements
  • Others do not have slats and are designed to hold a foundation or box spring, which then supports the mattress
  • Make sure to check which Platform Bed type you’re buying to ensure it works with your mattress setup

Metal Bed Frame (Hollywood Frame)

Metal Bed Frame/Hollywood Frame

Metal Bed Frame is a simple stand-alone frame; often referred to as a “Hollywood Frame”. This type of base is typically used with a box spring or foundation. These frames are usually affordable and easy to assemble.

However, Metal Bed Frames do come in a variety of styles—let’s break down the different options:

  • Wheeled Frames: Great for wood floors or tile. Not ideal for carpeting as it can pull up the carpet fibers
  • Glide Frames: Ideal for all floor surfaces. Glides allow the base to move easily for cleaning and rearranging — and do not leave imprints on carpeting!
  • Solid Foot: These are often found on Economy Frames. The foot allows support of the frame only and cannot be easily moved for cleaning or rearranging

As a friendly reminder, be sure to double-check the type of Metal Bed Frame you’re purchasing to confirm it requires a foundation to be used with your new mattress.

Bunkie Board (Ultra Low-Profile Foundation)

Bunkie Board (Ultra Low-Profile Foundation)

Great for low-profile needs — a Bunkie Board A.K.A Ultra Low Profile Foundation is a slim, solid or slatted foundation used to reinforce mattress support on bunk beds and platform beds.

Bunkie Boards aren’t all the same—let’s take a closer look at the different types:

  • Slatted Design: A slatted design is often more affordable and allows airflow throughout the foundation — Air flow reduces moisture build-up and can prolong the life and sanitation of your mattress
  • Solid Construction: Often manufactured for higher-end foam-based mattresses that require a completely flat foundation. This construction is often a metal frame topped with balsa wood

High-Rise Frame

High Rise Frame

A High-Rise Frame is an affordable metal bed frame designed with extra height to maximize under-bed storage. These frames typically offer 14–18 inches of clearance and can support a mattress directly—no need for a foundation or box spring!

  • Foot Print: Great for small spaces, guest rooms, or minimalist set-ups
  • Versatility: Compatible with most mattresses
  • Storage: Most Bed Frames offer 8″ of storage space where-as High-Rise Frames offer 14″ or more

Make sure to check the support requirements with the mattress manufacturer. Some High-Rise Frames are not designed to support foam mattresses.

FAQs About Mattress Bases

Most modern mattresses are adjustable base compatible—but not all. It’s always best to check with your sales associate or the mattress manufacturer to confirm whether the model you’re considering works with an adjustable base.

A quick way to tell if a mattress is not compatible is to feel for a rigid metal border wire along the outer edge. In some cases, you may even feel exposed coils. These features on some models can prevent the mattress from flexing properly with an adjustable base.

First, check how many slats your Platform Bed has and how far apart they are. Most Platform Beds are designed to support your Mattress without the need for a Foundation or Box Spring—but not all.

If your Platform Bed has many slats that are 3″ apart or less, and the frame includes center support (a leg or bar running down the middle), then you likely won’t need a Foundation.

However, if your platform bed has fewer than 10 slats or they’re spaced too far apart, your mattress may not get the support it needs. In that case, consider adding a Bunkie Board, Low-Profile Foundation, or Standard Foundation for proper support.

An Adjustable Base can ease back pain by reducing pressure on your spine and improving sleep posture. Elevating your head or legs helps with circulation and comfort—plus, built-in features like massage and zero-gravity make it even easier to relax and recover.
